Venice

Sunday night

We arrived in Venice a little while ago and took a water taxi to our hotel on the Grand Canal.   Those water taxis fly across the water.

We arrived at my favorite time of day – the gloaming I think it may be called ?  Late evenings in the summer when the light is long and low and casts a magical cast on everything.

Lots of people on the streets. No cars, of course.  Romantic restuarants filled with people eating dinner. I am getting used to this idea of dinner late at night after the bustle of the day.

Our hotel seems very typical of much of Venice.  Faded glory. I find it charming and am very glad to have a real shower and a real bed!

We wandered around the area around our hotel for awhile but didn’t go far as it was still hot and we are tired (and we didn’t have a map – it seems very easy to get lost here).  Lots to see but also lots of tourists (and tourist junk to sell them) and LOTs of pushy street vendors.

Tomorrow we will figure out a plan for seeing the sights.  We may try to go to a concert one night while we are here.  There are a lot of flyers that look interesting in the lobby.

Interestingly, our hotel seems full of Americans.  And the streets, too.  Very different from Dubrovnik.
