The tide is like a giant clock here. You glance at the water and know soon if the
tide is coming in or going out. When the
water goes out, the landbridge is open and that drives many decisions: when
will we go to the store or run errands, what time will we get up in the
morning, when will visitors come, when will dinner be ?
When the sun shines the water sparkles and dances as the
waves advance and recede. When the water
is out the boats are marooned and you see all the rocks and the bottom of the
sea. And then the water comes in again
and covers everything up. Endless change.
People who live on this island need to be in sync with the
nature around them. Whether or not the
tide is in or out is an important consideration for many routine
activities. Whether or not it will rain
determines when you do your laundry so you can dry it on the clothesline.
